A significant portion (over 40%) of the bird species in the Aghanashini estuary are migratory winter visitors that arrive seeking food and suitable habitats. The Aghanashini estuary is an ideal location for these birds due to its rich food sources like fish, bivalves, and worms, and its diverse micro-habitats including mudflats, mangroves, and open water.

The Aghanashini Estuary was recently designated a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, in part due to its role in supporting the biogeographic populations of several waterbird species, including the Indian River Tern and others.
